Dear Parents/Carers,

We were delighted to see so many of you attend the recent transition visits and we hope your children had a lovely experience meeting their new class teacher and getting a little more familiar with what will undoubtedly be very different surroundings!

Mr Speck, Mrs Hill and myself were impressed with the confidence and excitement that the children showed; the last few months have been taxing for us all but we hope you are reassured that their move to us will be as happy and pleasant as we can make it for them.

I just wanted to update you on a few points that came out of the sessions, so you are fully prepared for the start of the new term.

Admission & Contact Forms:
If you have not done so already, could I urge you to hand your form back to main reception at Fulwell Juniors by the end of the week as the data provided is essential for our new term preparations. I am in the office every day from 8.30am to 3.30pm until Friday 7th August (when I commence 2 weeks leave) so hopefully you can find a time slot to make this happen. If for any reason you did not receive your pack as you could not attend your designated session, please get in touch to arrange collection.

First Morning Start Time:
Mr Speck underlined the complex plans we have had to put in place to ensure all children can arrive and depart from the school building safely and separately to one another. To this end, he was disappointed to advise parents that the usual first day protocols could not be observed. We have since had a rethink on this issue, and would like to invite parents into their respective yard zones at 8.15am on the morning of Wednesday 2nd September, so that you can enjoy a few minutes with your child to say goodbye before they line up for registration.
For Mrs Softley's class, this will be the rear yard and Mrs Bankhead and Miss Whitfield's classes will be on the front yard. You should still observe the gate protocols and enter the yards through your designated access point. We ask parents to do this sensibly, keeping suitable distance from each other and for one adult only to be in attendance. We hope this goes some way to making your child's first morning with us a little less daunting and affords you the opportunity to see them on their way for this next important phase of their education.

Early Bird Club:
As mentioned on the visit, we will be running our Early Bird Club from Monday 7th September; if you are yet to register your interest, please do so at your earliest opportunity as there is quite a good demand for places. If at all possible, we would appreciate parents engaging with the club from 7.45am so that all children arrive together, rather than some children coming to the club later. This is just to ensure a safe handover takes place but please get in touch if this will be an issue for you.

Sibling Links:
As you now know, Year 3 children start at 8.30am but some of you may have other children at the school with us who don't start until later. Initially we had considered the possibility of the older child being dropped off at the same time to assist parents, but the practicalities of this are going to be too difficult to effectively manage given the plans we are putting in place to keep children separated. We would therefore suggest that you take advantage of the Early Bird Club instead; even if it is only for a few minutes until your older child's start time it will save you from having to wait out on Chapman Street for what could be up to 30 minutes depending on your older child's year group. Please get back in touch with me should you want to take up this service.

Redby Out of School Club:
The logistics of Redby staff collecting children at the end of the school day or dropping them off on a morning has caused us a significant headache, not least as we are advising parents that - as far as possible - children are to be kept apart from each other with no year group mixing (siblings aside). It does not send the right message for Redby Out of School Club to then be picking up children from across all year groups to take them back to an environment where they will undoubtedly interact with each other.
We have therefore come to a compromise with the management of the Club. For end of day pick up, children in Year 3 and 4 will be collected at 3.40pm from the REAR yard, and children in Year 5 and 6 will be collected at 4.00pm from the FRONT yard.
If you are likely to be using Redby's services, it is essential that you let us know as we will have an internal collection procedure in place. At 3.30pm Year 3 children attending the Club will simply arrive to their designated zone in the main school hall. They will be held here until Year 4 children are dismissed at 3.40pm. All children will then be brought out onto the yard and handed over to the Redby staff.
For Year 5 and 6, the process is exactly that same only with Year 5 children reporting to the hall at 3.50pm to wait until Year 6 finish at 4.00pm.

The morning drop off is slightly more complicated due to the designated access points for each individual class. We have, however, made it clear to Redby staff that they cannot come on to the yard to wait and will thus have to organise children into their year group/class time slots, ensuring they enter the yard by their designated gate. This will be a little complicated initially but we are confident that after a few days, children and staff will become far more familiar with the staggered start times, and everyone will be where they need to be promptly.
I would advise you discuss any other aspects of these arrangements directly with Redby Out of School Club if required. We would also stress that this scenario is far from ideal as it still compromises our strict rules around mixing year groups but we appreciate it is the only way we can accomodate the Club and know how essential the service will be to some of you. Parents make this decision at their own risk but hopefully it is a step in the right direction.

School Meals:
It was mentioned in the meetings that we could possibly be running a slightly amended menu for children when we return in September, just so we can get children in and out of the dining hall in good time. I would therefore advise we will provide three meal options daily:
• The main hot meal choice
• The vegetarian option will be amended to a jacket potato with a choice of topping
• A 'Grab and Go' bag which will have a sandwich or wrap with crisps/fruit/biscuit/yoghurt and water
We hope this assists with your decision whether to have your child take up a school meal; modifications to choices will be applied as the term progresses. The cost is £2.20 per meal/£11.00 per week - if you think you may be eligible for Free School Meals, why not apply through the Together for Children website? Finally, please remember the guidance issued at the meetings regarding equipment and bags from home. Just to re-cap:
• No stationery/pencil cases or other equipment from home allowed
• If staying for school meals, the only additional item children may want to bring is a mid-morning healthy snack (no nuts, please) and their water bottle (clearly named).
• If bringing a home prepared packed lunch, please ensure the bag is discreet and appropriate; space within the classrooms is at a premium - there is no need for any child to be bringing any other bag with them as the movement of resources between home and school is suspended for the foreseeable.
• School meal payments need to be made on-line via the City of Sunderland website. Please ensure you put your childs name in the narrative box. We will not accept cash or cheque payments as we have no means of banking them.

If there is anything else at all that we can assist with, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards.
